Being a Family Caregiver Has Its Rewards

November is National Family Caregivers Month, a time to recognize and honor family caregivers. It’s been celebrated annually since 1997, when Bill Clinton signed the first NFC Month Presidential Proclamation. Being a caregiver is hard work. It can be overwhelming, stressful and challenging.

However, it doesn’t come without rewards, even though they may be hard to see - especially if you’re in the middle of caregiving. An article in the Fond Du Lac Reporter does a particularly good job of listing specific ways in which caregivers can find fulfillment and enrichment during their journey:

  • Caregiving offers people a chance to “give back” to someone important in life.
  • Caregiving encourages people to spend more quality time with their loved ones.
  • Caregiving can get people in touch with their family history.
  • Caregiving gives people an opportunity to learn new skills.
  • Caregiving helps people recognize their own support systems.
  • Caregiving can help people become more compassionate and loving.
  • Caregiving leads people to plan their own future.

It’s good to take a second and remind yourself of these benefits, whether you’re a caregiver now or one in the future.
