If you live a nice long life and manage to stay mentally sharp, your marriage might be part of the reason. A recent review in the Journal of Neurology, Neurosurgery and Psychiatry found that married people are less likely to develop dementia than people who have never been married or whose spouse has died. A possible explanation is that couples tend to motivate each other to be more social and adopt healthier habits. Also, sexual activity has been associated with better cognitive functioning.

But if you aren't married now or never have been, don't be disheartened. The study also shows that as society changes, the gap in risk between married and unmarried seems to be gradually narrowing.
