Knock-Off Make-up Can Be Dangerous

The price is appealing, but those beauty products and toiletries that look just like the ones you buy at traditional retail stores - but cost so much less - may be hazardous to your health. U.S. Customs and Border Protection seized a record number of counterfeit goods last year, worth nearly $1.4 billion. The most common place for consumers to find and buy these products is from street vendors -- or sometimes online.

CBS News conducted an investigation and, by testing some of the products they bought from street vendors, found that eye shadows in a fake palette had nearly four times the amount of lead as those in the real version. Other dangerous chemicals reportedly found in in fake make-up include arsenic, mercury and aluminum.

In addition to counterfeit make-up, cologne and some toiletries such as toothpaste and mouthwash are being smuggled into the U.S. Customs inspectors pull suspicious packages aside for inspection, but not all of these products are caught before reaching the streets. Most of the packages waiting for inspections are from China and Hong Kong.
