Avid golfers across the northern states are savoring their last few weeks on the course. The blaze of autumn color actually makes this the most scenic time of the year to be out on the links, but dropping temperatures require a bit more preparation before you tee off, according to Troy Albers, director of golf for Giants Ridge Golf Course, a premier 18-hole course carved from the Superior National Forest in northeastern Minnesota.
"When the temperatures get brisk, it's very important to warm up adequately," Albers advises. "Spend several minutes stretching indoors, concentrating on your back and leg muscles. Then, hit some practice balls on the driving range before you head to the first tee."
Stay warm and loose as you play, Albers adds. He recommends wearing a nylon wind shirt over a sweater or turtleneck, stating "They break the wind without inhibiting your range of motion."
He also suggests investing in "cart gloves" to wear in between shots. "Your regular golf gloves are okay for the brief time it takes to hit a shot," he notes. "It's more important to keep your hands warm between shots. Cart gloves do this and are easy to slide on and off over your golf gloves."
In a state that boasts the highest number of golfers per capita despite its short golf season, Albers has acquired a few tips on preserving a level of play through the long winter months:
