Jack (I presume),

PDF is a great way to send your resume. Since employers can download Adobe Reader for free most of them have it or can obtain it quickly to read your resume.

I also found several websites that only hire those who are age 50+. If anyone is interested I can list them here for you.

allie,

Thanks for the valuable insight! I know I feel as though I have wasted plenty of time with cover letters and such. One time I spent over 3 hours writing a cover letter which tied together basically a perfect picture of my skills and experience and how it related to the job posting. After talking to the recruiter it was apparent they didn't even read it.

Also - I've heard PDF has become a new acceptable standard for application submission to preserve formatting. Do you have any feelings about that?

Okay, so I am a professional Human Resource individual who reads your internet cover letters and resumes. I have valid advice that is contrary to what you have read in this article. The economy is so bad that for every position we post we are receiving over 300 resumes. Thus, we do not have time to read your cover letters. Before the economy cursed us we would get about 40 resumes…if we were lucky. Save yourself the time and effort and just sent your resume with a short paragraph stating what position you are applying for and that your resume is attached. Please only attach your resume with Microsoft Word not Word Perfect or any other Word Processor program. Microsoft Word is widely used in the business world plus if we cannot open your document we will move along to the next resume. Please remember that the Human Resources departments are being downsized as well therefore, any extra information you send is more than likely not being viewed (at least not at this time).

the whole internet application process is a sham. i call it the internet black hole. i would rather have someone punch me in the face and tell me they think i'm an idiot and they can't hire me than have my application disappear into cyberspace only to never be heard of again.
