Adults-Only Cruises Gaining Steam

Vacation. You've been working hard all year and now it's finally time for you and your partner, maybe with a group of your friends, or maybe just you, to embark on a relaxing and scenic cruise. You board the ship, get yourself a frozen cocktail, and park it on a lounge chair by the pool. You start to doze off...then you're snapped back to the world by a shockingly cold splash of water to your face. An eight-year old just cannon-balled into the pool right by your chair. You don't mind kids, but you've been there, done that. Your vacations now aren't meant to be filled with cannon balls.

So, if you enjoy cruises but are looking for an adult-only vacation, what are your options? Turns out you have a lot! Whether you're looking for a few day getaway to the Carribbean, or a longer Transatlantic trip, here are just a handful of cruise lines worth looking into.

Viking Ocean Cruises debuted in 2015 with an adults-only (18+) policy and even better, they gear cruises to guests over 50 years old. They are known for offering experiences to guests with interests in art, culture, history and exploration. The company recently announced that their River cruises will also now be adults-only, reflecting guests' desires for an environment sans children.

While not yet sailing the seas, Virgin Voyages, Richard Branson's new cruise line, is also adults-only. Set to sail in 2020, the first ship will be named Scarlet Lady, a nod to the company's efforts to encourage female leaders. Promising big, exciting things, you can sneak a peek of what's to come in this Forbes article.

Another option is U by Uniworld, an innovative and fresh concept to river cruising that boasts tailored, immersive experiences for adults only. While originally designed and limited to younger adults, the company recently lifted age caps, making this a great option for a family vacation with your adult children.

P&O Cruises, the oldest cruise line in the world, offers several adults-only ships that aim to provide relaxation and stylish surroundings, each with unique itineraries. The British-American line sails mainly from England, but visits ports all over the world, including Africa, Australia, Europe, the Middle East, South America, North America, and Asia.

And we can't forget to mention Holland America, known for its classic cruise experience. It's a great option for older adults traveling solo, as it offers a Single Partner program where you can be matched up by gender to share a room. This will cut down on your costs, and may even introduce you to a new friend. Holland America ships are known for classic night-time entertainment, such as blues groups, gala nights, and good casinos.

There surely is a trend happening and baby boomers are helping to set it. A recent Cruise Critic poll found that 57% of cruisers prefer to cruise without children. There are sure to be more adults-only options hitting the seas in the future.
