Eat This, Avoid That

Scientists keep discovering the benefits of certain foods for boosting our longevity and well-being. On the other hand, there are foods that are most likely to be tainted and cause serious health problems. There are even a couple of foods that qualify in both areas.  

See how many advantageous foods on this list of 29 selected by Runner’s World are in your refrigerator or cabinet. Some such as broccoli, beets, berries, and tea you’ve probably heard before. Others, such as cookie dough, pickles and chia seeds may surprise you. 

While Runner’s World was gathering a list of best foods – Business Insider has reported which foods the Centers for Disease Control (CDC) warn are most likely to make you sick. We’ll give you the short version on that  – and you can read more here.

  • Spinach that's unwashed or raw can harbor E. coli and norovirus.
  • Chicken and turkey can be contaminated with listeriosis.
  • Sprouts are frequently contaminated with salmonella.
  • Unpasteurized juice is easily tainted by raw fruit, which can harbor E. coli.
  • Because they are bottom feeders, shellfish like oysters can naturally concentrate bacteria.
  • Dairy and eggs can be contaminated with salmonella.
  • Ground beef can harbor Clostridium perfringens and E. coli — usually when your burger is undercooked.
