Here's Why You Want Satellite Radio
by Jeremy Laukkonen

You're sitting in a traffic jam, barely moving. To make it worse, every single radio station seems to be on commercial, causing you to switch back and forth a million times. If only there were commercial-free radio stations. Wait a second, there are! They're just not free. But they can be. We're giving away six months of Sirius satellite radio to one lucky person who participates in our summer song contest (contest ended 6/29/18). If you're not all that familiar with satellite radio, let's get you quickly caught up so you understand why it's so great.

As the name suggests, satellite radio is a radio service that uses satellites circling the earth to broadcast its programming. As we mentioned, unlike traditional radio, satellite radio is subscription-based. It not only offers music stations, but it has news, talk, sports and comedy channels too. Sometimes you're just not in the mood for music and satellite radio offers the option to easily choose something different.

Probably the biggest benefit of satellite radio is the lack of commercials. For many people, that alone is reason enough to subscribe. You could listen to your favorite songs of the 70s with a 1970s station or laugh your way through a long commute with a comedy station.

Another big advantage is that the signal is available over a much larger geographical area than a terrestrial radio station could ever cover. Each satellite radio service provides the same set of stations and programs to the entire area it covers. Some satellite radio stations can cover an entire continent, so you could theoretically drive across the country and never have to change the channel. If you regularly drive a couple hours from your home, say to the beach each weekend in the summer, you woulod no longer have to search for radio stations when your favorite station cuts out.

To listen in your car, you do need a special receiver, but about 60% of new cars come equipped with Sirius XM these days. The automotive industry has been a driving force behind satellite radio and for a time, was the only way to access it. Now access is easy, thanks to portable receiver units, which can be taken in to your home, your office, etc. You can also stream satellite radio from your phone, tablet or computer.

In the US, you can get satellite radio through one company: Sirius XM Satellite Radio. They offer a few different packages, each one a little different. We're giving away a $100 gift card, which would get you 6 months free of the SiriusXM Select package, the most popular package. But you can spend the $100 however you'd like! You can go here to compare packages and see what would be best for you.

Good luck to everyone who participates! For more details on the Summer Song Special, click here.
