Smartphone Pricing Causing Sticker Shock for Some

A smartphone isn't just a phone. If you own one, and the majority of boomers do, you know just how much you can do on your phone. People now use their smartphones as an everything-device for communication, entertainment, work and photography. It can replace traditional desktops, laptops, and good cameras. So it makes sense that the device should be costly, but the recent uptick in pricing has left a lot of people a little peeved.

When Apple released the iPhoneX last year at a price of $999, many critics laughed. However, Apple proved that buyers are willing to pay for processing power, storage, battery life, data speeds, large screen, and perhaps one of the most important features, the camera technology. People attach a high value to their phone, as it's likely the most important device they own. While many people loudly complained about the price, even more people went and bought it, effectively helping Apple to set a new price point for smartphones.

Price is increasing across brands, as well. An article from CNET contains a chart showing the most popular smartphones and corresponding prices from 2016-2018. If the $999 price tag of the high-end iPhoneX just isn't affordable or doesn't interest you, there are still plenty of mid-range smartphones available. However, it may be time to get over the shock of phone prices and accept it as the new normal.
