3 Top Tips to Upgrading Your Bedroom to a Sleep Sanctuary

In this tumultuous rollercoaster ride of a world we’re all currently attempting to survive, having a bedroom that’s a true sleep sanctuary is more important than ever. Maintaining mental health during Covid can be a little difficult, though not impossible, and getting plenty of sleep is an extremely important foundational starting point.

However, if your bedroom has been outfitted and decorated in mere afterthought, thrown together haphazardly, or hasn’t been “freshened up” in ages, it’s probably past time for an upgrade. Especially if your quality of sleep has been poor lately.

Even if you’re a complete novice when it comes to decorating and interior design or you’re just not sure how to make your bedroom more sleep-friendly, we’ve got some tips that are all but certain to help transform it into an oasis of rest.

Pick a New Palette

According to a medically reviewed article last year and numerous artists and interior designers, colors can have a powerful influence on moods, feelings, and emotions, and even “influence physiological reactions.” While painting and redecorating your bedroom might not be a super-simple project, it can be a huge first step in transforming it into a sleep sanctuary.

Of course, some color choices are purely subjective but there are certain ones that generally have the same effect on most of us. When it comes to calming colors, consider one of these six choices:

  • Lush Lavender
  • Blue-Gray
  • Pastel Purple
  • Dusty Pink
  • Sea Blue
  • Sage Green

You may be surprised at how big of a difference a new color-scheme can make, especially when you take the time to find the best paint color for you. However, adding blackout curtains and textured blankets and pillows can help elevate your sanctuary to the next level.

While more and more people are turning to sleep-aids like CBD, many of them would quite likely benefit greatly from a bedroom color change.

How Old is Your Bed?

If you’re not sure or it has been over 7 years since you’ve replaced it, a new bed should be on your list of must-haves. While you may not need an adjustable base or a fancy frame for a good night’s sleep, a quality foam mattress can be the perfect addition to your bedroom.

Old-fashioned spring mattresses and those air-mattresses wear out the fastest and the Better Sleep Council, quoted as saying “good sleep leads to good health and a better quality of life,” recommends getting a new one every 7 - 10 years. While many different factors will affect your bed’s lifespan, memory foam and pillow-top mattresses will generally last you longer while providing a fantastic night’s sleep.

Transform the Entire Ambiance

These days there are plenty of 21st-century options that give you more control than ever before. With virtual assistants like Alexa and Google Assistant coupled with Wi-Fi LED bulbs, plugs, and electronic devices, you can set the perfect atmosphere any time of day or night.

If you don’t want an “assistant” in the bedroom, there are a variety of control panels that provide a central hub for lighting, climate, and even music. It just depends on your DYI expertise and how much control you want over your sanctuary.

You should also seriously consider adding a few plants to the bedroom. If you don’t have a green thumb and tend to kill every plant you own, buy fresh cut flowers regularly or join a subscription service. According to a study by Rutgers, “flowers have a long-term positive effect on moods” and participants felt less “depressed, anxious, and agitated” after receiving flowers.

A few small and fairly inexpensive changes to the bedroom can result in a more relaxing environment where sleep is almost always assured. Getting restful sleep is imperative and your bedroom should truly be your sanctuary. After all, you do spend a good portion of your life at least trying to sleep. Why not make it your favorite room in the house?
