Can This Fruit a Day Keep the Grays Away?

As the old saying goes, "An apple a day keeps the doctor away." We know fruit is healthy and contains vitamin C, which can help keep you healthy. So when we came across an article that touted eating a certain fruit may keep gray hairs away, we wondered why that's so.

According to nutritionist Frida Harju-Westman, eating tangerines daily could help slow down the graying process, thanks to the vitamin B12 found in the fruit. Why? Apparently when the body is lacking in B12, it produces hydrogen peroxide, which can bleach the hair. After a quick "B12 gray hair" search, we came across some information confirming that graying hair can be a sign of a B12 deficiency.

Yes, tangerines contain B12, but so do a lot of other foods. You can get your daily intake of vitamin B12 by eating a variety of animal products, such as liver and other organ meats and shellfish, especially clams. B12 can also be found in all red meats, poultry, eggs, milk and dairy products. While the vitamin is found in plant-based foods, like fortified cereals and grain-based products, it's absorbed by your body best from animal sources. So, if you're a vegetarian or vegan, you might need a supplement. Just be sure to take it along with other B vitamins for better absorption.

It's important to note that around age 50, your body doesn't absorb B12 as well as it used to. So consider adding B12-rich foods to your diet or taking a supplement. It will help your overall health and maybe help keep those pesky grays at bay, too.
