Don’t Move Out of Your Home: Update It
By Natasha Woods

Living on your own is never easy, no matter the age. But as you age, it gets a lot tougher to do tasks you previously could with ease from walking up the stairs or even answering your door. The amount of energy and time it takes to perform such tasks as we age, has us thinking about moving in with family or into a nursing home.

However, before you make such a decision, you can update your home with innovative technology that lets you perform daily tasks with ease. It all starts with these five technologies to keep you independent in your own home.

Save your knees, install a stair lift

Climbing up and down the stairs can be hazardous. After all, falling is one of the most common causes of serious injury when it comes to aging. It also puts additional strain on your knees which can lead to swelling and pain.

Stair lifts are important for houses with two stories or more. Getting a stair lift installed for your staircase lets you avoid injury and even death related to falling, giving you the chance to climb stairs with ease. The lift easily installs against the wall that goes up with the stairs and gives you the comfort to sit down while the lift does the work for you. Therefore, you don’t have to exert your body trying to go up and down the stairs.

A smart doorbell and door lock

There is no need to get up every time someone comes to your door. With technology like Nest Doorbell and Nest X Yale Lock, you have the access to see who is at the door from the comforts of anywhere in the house! You can even talk to the individual at the door from your smartphone or tablet. The door lock on the technology works without a key, so individuals you have given access to can use their smartphones to enter your home without the need of you answering the door. When you do need to answer the door, you can unlock it, without the need to go to the door, with your phone or tablet or you can use the passcode on the lock’s touchscreen.

You can also pair this with a voice-activated personal assistant device such as Google Home.

Turn your lights off through your smartphone

The Philips Hue system takes your home’s lighting system and gives you the chance to control it from the palm of your hands. With Hue installed in your home, all you need to do is install the Hue Hub app onto your smartphone or tablet and gain complete control of the lights, from turning on and off to dimming the lights. You can even turn off any lights that you might have forgotten in a different room without having to go to it. This removes any need for you to go from one room to another turning the lights off at night.

Control any device with WeMo

The Belkin Wemo Insight Smart Plug lets you control any appliance you want. The device is plugged into an outlet and has an outlet of its own. Whatever device you decide to plug into it, you can control with your smartphone, giving you the ease of turning it on and off from afar. WeMo also comes with a motion sensor which can turn on the device as soon as it senses you’ve entered the room. This is perfect for lamps in rooms you go into at night.

Enhance your home security by going smart

One thing about living on your own is you can never be too secure. You have numerous home security options from the giants such as ADT and Comcast. What these security systems do is hook up to your door and windows and notify you when they are opened. While a smart doorbell and lock give you the same functionality, it is only limited to the door it is installed on.

But it doesn’t stop there!  You can hook smart security cameras for monitoring purposes, water leak sensors, and even smoke detectors to these security technologies. This gives you a comprehensive security monitoring device that you have complete access to from a tablet or smartphone, letting you live in your home with a lot more security.

Conclusion

As the world moves towards introducing smart technology in every facet of our lives, it is important that we embrace the change. It may take a little time for you, who might not be accustomed to newer technology, to adapt to these technologies. However, smart home tech presents so much upside from making your home more secure to allow you to perform tasks without exerting yourself. It only makes sense that you adopt such technology for improved living at home.
