Here's the Best Time to Eat Thanksgiving Dinner

It's an annual disagreement for some families - what time to eat Thanksgiving dinner. If your family can't seem to agree on a time each year, check out this humorous but sound argument for sitting down to your holiday feast at 4PM, featured in an article on The Atlantic.

According to the writer, Joe Pinsker, 4PM is the perfect time for several reasons. First, if you eat dinner earlier and you're cooking, that means you're getting up early to start the turkey. Given it's a holiday, wouldn't it be nice to sleep in just a little bit, maybe even sit down and watch the parade? A 4PM dinner time also is early enough to have time to take a nap after eating (although this article busts the myth about turkey causing drowsiness) and to have time to eat a plate of leftovers later in the night.

Eat too late and it makes it harder for guests that may be traveling a distance. Plus, it's likely you're going to eat a larger meal than normal and eating a big meal too close to bedtime is just not good!

Pinsker makes some good points, and we can think of another reason to eat right in the middle at 4PM. If you have grandkids, you know they typically get grumpier the later dinner is. This may be true for some of your adult guests too. So get everyone fed and avoid that witching hour!

Oh, and a 4PM dinner leaves time for all you deal shoppers to eat and hit the stores. Be sure to check what stores are open, as a growing number of stores have decided to remain closed Thanksgiving night. This USA Today article has a list you can check. Or just grab a glass of wine, put your holiday PJs on, and do some online shopping.

Happy Thanksgiving!
