Here's What the Largest Spa in North America Has to Offer

An icy plunge pool, a steamy sauna, a Dead Sea style float...all these things can be experienced in a day at the largest spa in North America. If you love a good spa day, you'll want to explore what Spa Nordik has to offer.

Located in Chelsea, Quebec, this Canadian spa is only a 20-minute drive to Parliament Hill in Ottawa, Canada's capital city. Enjoy scenic views of the gorgeous countryside while you relax and rejuvenate. Those brave enough can practice thermotherapy, a tradition that includes alternating the body through hot and cold environments with rest periods in between before repeating the whole cycle again. Why must you be brave? While the hot part is easy (sauna, hot tub, steam room), the cold part may induce some screams. Cold showers, cold plunge pools and even overhead buckets on a rope are used...don't be surprised if you can't make it past your thighs in the plunge pool!

While thermotherapy is a highlight at this spa, it's not the only thing offered. A gigantic pool filled with 10 tons of Epsom salt allows you to float, Dead Sea style. If you haven't heard about float therapy, read this. Float therapy offers a lot of benefits: it can lower your blood pressure and heart rate, it helps exfoliate your skin, ease joint pain and can help flush toxins from your body. Not to mention it's a pretty cool experience. Most float therapy is done within a small "pod", but Spa Nordik's pool is the only one in North America like it. An interesting experience, for sure.

Of course, you'll find the basic massages and other body treatments at the spa, but you'll also be offered some unique experiences, including a Russian ritual known as a Banya treatment. This treatment balances dry heat and steam to improve blood circulation, cleanse the skin, eliminate toxins, and boost the immune system. It's similar to a sauna, but a bit cooler, which enables you to withstand it longer. It ends up being more hydrating and detoxifying and it also won't dry your throat out like a traditional sauna might.

In addition, there's a restaurant that serves "spa" style food as expected, but it also serves more filling items along with desserts and alcohol, so it won't deprive you of a good meal or drink if that's what you're after. You can also visit the Biërgarden and enjoy local microbrews while sitting on the beautiful outdoor terrace.

The spa is open year-round and offers lodging, some of which can fit up to 12 people, so it would be perfect for a group getaway. Think ladies weekend! And hey, guys love a good pamper too sometimes. Ottawa is a short drive away and boasts plenty of museums, art galleries and other attractions.
