Keep Your Feet Happy on Vacation

Many vacations involve sightseeing, which inevitably means a lot of time spent walking around. It's good exercise, but it can be tough on your feet! Especially if you're not used to walking so much or if you're not wearing the proper footwear. While we can't change your exercise habits for you, we can share some good advice on how to pack the right shoes and make them more comfortable for your trip.

Travel & Leisure recently asked four podiatrists their best advice on the topic and one of the most important tips is to break in your shoes before your trip, so you avoid possible blisters and pain. Wear your new shoes around the house for an hour or so at a time until they have loosened a bit.

Pack smart by bringing the proper type of footwear, like Altra shoes, for your planned activities. If you know you'll be walking or hiking a lot, pack comfortable and supportive shoes. Lace-ups and straps are better than slip-ons because they keep the foot in place and help prevent injury. Do not wear flip-flops for any type of extended walking, as they do not provide adequate structure or stability for the foot.

If you're going to be walking for a while, chances are your feet may get sweaty. Whether you have naturally sweaty feet or are experiencing hyperhidrosis, it's best to wear moisture-wicking socks. Feet swell in the heat, so you could end up getting blisters in spots you normally wouldn't, so be prepared: pack more than one pair of shoes, along with some band-aids and Neosporin.

Another good tip is so switch up your footwear throughout the day. Wearing the same shoe all day long with extended walking may cause injury if the shoes don't provide enough support.

Use pads, cushions or insoles to help customize your shoes to your feet. Opt for custom orthotics if you tend to have foot problems to begin with.

While not a podiatrist, one of our writers here is an avid hiker, and visits Disney World at least once every year, so she’s a bit of expert on vacations with significant walking involved. While you don’t typically associate sandals with comfort, especially when walking many miles, she swears by the Clarks Breeze Sea sandals. According to the Clarks website, the Breeze Seas come with a soft fabric lining which ensures an abrasion-free environment for all-day wear and an EVA-cushioned footbed and midsole that massages the foot with each and every step.

An added bonus of wearing sandals on summer vacations is ditching the socks. This is especially true when visiting Disney for example, particularly in August when temperatures regularly sit in the 90s. If you can’t find a pair of the Clarks, consider the On-The-go Sandal, made by Skechers. It’s currently the highest rated walking sandal on Amazon!

These helpful tips should ensure your feet stay happy on your next vacation!
