New App Offers Hearing Help for TV Watching

You're at the bar for the big game, but the crowd is so loud that you can't hear anything. Your favorite show is coming on, but you're babysitting your sleeping grand kids and don't want to wake them with the loud volume you usually use. You're at the gym running on the treadmill, but no sound is coming from the television in front of you. All of these problems can now be solved with a new App called Tunity, which allows users to hear live audio from televisions, even if the TV is muted, right on their smartphone. How is that possible, you ask?

It's very simple for the user. With a smartphone, you scan the television you're watching and Tunity syncs to that channel's audio using a patented deep learning and computer vision technology. The audio is played on your smartphone through its speaker or headphones. So, if you're in a noisy environment, put on some headphones and you'll be set. Tunity currently works with over 100 U.S. channels, but only on current broadcasting, meaning the show must be airing at the time of use.

While the app was originally designed for situations described above, the company quickly realized the app could be extremely useful for people with hearing loss. Having the audio played on a smartphone speaker or headphones allows users to control the volume and be able to hear a television that may otherwise be too hard to hear. And for those with hearing aids, Tunity can stream the audio right to Bluetooth enabled hearing aids via a smartphone.

The app could be very beneficial to baby boomers now and in the coming years. Hearing loss due to aging is a common condition that impacts many older adults. It's estimated that 1 in 6 baby boomers have a hearing problem. After age 65, almost 1 in 2 adults will experience some degree of hearing loss and may even need a hearing aid. So, if your hearing just isn't what it used to be, Tunity offers an easy solution so you don't have to miss out or feel bothersome to those around you.

Curious about what others who have tried the app think? Read some reviews to find out what people like the most and least. Overall it gets rated a 4.6 out of 5 stars, so clearly the majority of people think it's a good app.

The best part and perhaps the reason why you have nothing to lose by giving it a shot? The app is free. Did you hear that? Free! So download it at Apple's App Store or Google Play.
