Caring for Aging Parents

As we get older so do our parents, and eventually, roles reverse, and it falls on us to care of these ones. Caring for aging parents can prove to be one of the most challenging responsibilities that children (or other carers) face. Depending on circumstances, those with aging parents will have to provide support in multiple ways including financially.

It is wise to prepare and use as many of the available resources as possible, to ease the burden and remain informed. If you have siblings, make sure all are involved in important discussions and decisions, and remember to include your parents to ensure their wishes are respected.

Here are a few aspects to take into consideration if you are caring for your parents:

Living arrangements:

As they begin needing more support, where will your parents live? Look at the circumstances: are they still capable of being on their own? Should they move in with you? Would they be better off in an assisted living facility? Again, it is worth discussing this as a family and consider the financial cost of each option.

If it is decided they continue living in their own home, think of ways you can ensure their home is suited to their current condition. Simple additions such as a hand rail or ramp to the front door can provide added stability and confidence, while an automatic outside light can help with tasks such as taking the bins out late at night. You can install slip-proof flooring and ensure they own supported and comfortable footwear which would lower the risk of accidents in the home.

Supervise their health:

Be observant: Is there something different in your parents’ appearance? Have they complained about any ailment? Are they experiencing memory loss? Are they wearing their glasses or contact lenses as they should be? Even if you don’t live nearby, once your parents reach a certain age encourage them to do regular health checks, share your concerns, seek professional advice and be quick to take action when and where necessary. Researching top rated medical alert systems may also provide you and your loved one piece of mind.

Think of Finances:

Do your parents have any investments? Own any resources and/or assets? Make a thorough assessment of your parents’ financial condition. Go over their living expenses and see how well they can continue caring for themselves financially. If you foresee any financial constraints, be sure to be open and honest with other family members such as spouses or siblings and make balanced decisions so there is no burden on one person.

Caring for your aging parents can seem dauting and most avoid thinking of a time their parents might become more reliant on them. However, being prepared is key to adapting to new circumstances and there is a plethora of information to make this transition as smooth and simple as possible.
