Everything You Need in Order to Start an Online Business
By Ray Blakney, Founder of Live Lingua

In this day and age, where a lot of things are done online, it actually makes a lot of sense to start an online business. If you do things well, it can work – just look at Live Lingua, for example, which helps a lot of people to learn a new language in a very effective way. However, it’s actually a bit difficult to kick things off. There are a few things that you should keep in mind if you want it to work.

If you want to start an online business and grow it to a degree that indicates your business is actually successful, below we’ll discuss the few key steps that you need to follow in order to achieve this. Without wasting any more of your time, let’s go.

Make Sure It Fills a Need

The most common mistake people make when starting out an online business is that they first look for a product, then for a market. If you want to be successful, start with the market. Find a group of people that have a problem that doesn’t have a good solution. And then, give them that solution.

Once you’ve got that, check out your competition. See what they’re doing, and how they’re doing it, and see where they could be improving but they’re not. This will give you a good idea of what you should do in order to be better than them.

Write a Copy to Sell Your Product

If you want to sell your product, you should first arouse people’s interest. This is done by a compelling headline, followed by a description of the problem your product is going to solve for them. When you establish your credibility as a person who can solve this problem, you can make an offer and a strong guarantee. Then, create a sense of urgency, and ask for the sale.

The thing to keep in mind when you’re doing this is to focus on how your product is unique in solving their problem. A customer will ask themselves what they’re going to get, and you should think about what you’re giving them.

Have a Good Website

When you’ve nailed your market, your product, and your sales process, it’s time to make your website. The key here is to be simple and to remember that you’ve got no more than five seconds to grab a person’s attention. After that, they’re gone.

You might want to add an opt-in offer if you want to collect email addresses and make sure you make buying easy. There shouldn’t be more than two clicks between the buyer and the checkout. And remember, your website is your storefront, just online, so make sure it’s customer-friendly.

You'll also want to make your website easy for search engines, such as Google, to find. This is called SEO (search engine optimization). A web developer can help you with SEO for your website, which may include optimizing keywords and a link building campaign.

Establish Your Reputation as an Expert

What people use the internet for the most is finding information. If you give that information to others, you will find that pretty soon you’ll be getting a good reputation as someone who knows what they’re talking about.

When you become an expert in forums and on social networking sites where your target market actually is, all you need to do is link yourself to your business, and you’ll find people coming to you pretty quickly.

Emails Can Turn Visitors into Buyers

We mentioned an opt-in list earlier. This is actually something that’s going to become a very valuable asset for your online business. Basically, your subscribers and customers give you permission to send them an email every once in a while.

What this indicates is that you’re actually giving them something they need, and you’re developing a relationship with them. The response is completely measurable, and you’ve got yourself a cheaper and much more effective marketing solution than say, print. Whoever opts-in is a lead, and an email is a perfect tool to follow up with that lead.

Don’t Quit Once You’ve Made the Sale

This is one of the biggest mistakes people do when they start an online business. They think that once they’ve closed the initial sale, they’re done. Instead, you want to give your customers something they’ll be able to use for a good while. A third of the people who purchased something from you will do it again if you follow up with them, and this is something you should take advantage of.

To get them to buy again, you can offer something that complements what they initially bought. Give them a discount coupon they can redeem when they buy something from you again, and give them a few suggestions on what they can buy right at that “Thank you” page that shows up when they buy. Before you know it, you’ll have repeat customers and a business that runs great.
