Fall Home Checklist

When the leaves start to change colors and morning dew begins to appear, you know it’s time to sit down and get your fall home cleaning checklist started. Each year as Fall approaches, there are some things you should do around the house to prepare for the change of seasons. Baby boomers own two out of every five homes in the country, so these tips likely apply to you. It's surely not your first rodeo, but it can't hurt to be reminded of things that should be checked and done before you can sit back and relax with your first pumpkin spice coffee of the season.

Roof

According to Premier Roof Cleaning Inc, you should clean your roof regularly and not allow mold or dirt to fester. You'll want to inspect your roof and make sure there are no areas that need patching. Check all interior ceilings for water stains to make sure there are no leaks.

Gutters

Check out those gutters. If they are clear, wait until later in fall to do a thorough cleaning, after the leaves around your house have fallen. Clogged gutters can cause roof damage that extends into your home and they also make a great nesting spot for insects. If your gutters are clogged when you inspect them the first time, you may need to clean them immediately and then again later in the fall.

Windows and Doorways

Inspect all windows and doorways for cracks. Air leaks are harder to notice during warmer months, but during colder months they can cause you to use a lot more energy keeping your house warm. Pick a windy day and go around each window and door and observe. Fall is a great time to open your windows for fresh air throughout the house. Replace any broken screens or order custom window screens! Price and buy directly online.

Patio Area

Clean up your patio area, put your furniture and other items in storage for the winter, and inspect the area for wear and tear. If you have an outdoor flag, this is a good time to inspect your flag and flagpole for any damage. An American flag should be treated carefully, so if you live in an area that experiences harsh weather, consider bringing it in for the season. There are many ways to prolong the life of your flag. While you're at it, be sure that your American flag is American made.

Lawn Care

Just because summer is ending, doesn't mean lawn care should end. Here's an article with five tips of what to do to prepare your lawn for winter.

Heating System

It's a good idea to get your heating system inspected once a year, and the fall is the perfect time do it. Clean out those furnace filters too or buy a new one. If you have a fireplace, inspect it before you use it for the first time.

Stock Up on Supplies

Now is a good time to make sure you're stocked up on emergency supplies should winter throw you a snow storm or two. If you don't already have one, fill a bin with supplies such as batteries, flashlights, blankets, bottled water, canned food, radio, and first aid. Portable generators can come in handy in the event of a power loss, so consider purchasing one, along with a space heater.

Update Decor

The change of seasons is the perfect time to update your home decor. Sprinkle in some splashes of seasonal decor through out your home to keep your space feeling fresh.

If you're one of the millions of people who suffer from asthma or allergies, then you have even more reason to get started on your Fall cleaning. Indoor allergens thrive in your home during the humid summer months, so Fall marks the time to rid your house of them for the upcoming winter months. Try "top down cleaning" by dusting ceiling fans, window treatments and light fixtures, and then start vacuuming carpets, couch cushions, furniture, etc.  Lastly, you can remove dust mites and allergens by throwing your comforters, mattress covers, pillow cases, bed skirts, rugs, curtains, blankets, and slip covers into the wash. And by the time you're done all this, the leaves should be on the lawn ready to be raked. Isn't Fall great?
