Startup Helps Battle Loneliness Among Older Adults

We featured an important article a little while back, How to Avoid Being Part of the "Loneliness Epidemic." If you haven't read it, you should. Even if you don't think it applies to you, it may...or it may make you realize that you know someone who may be feeling lonely. As the article states, loneliness is increasing among all age groups and it's putting our health at risk. A new startup recognized this trend and came up with a creative and useful way to help solve this problem.

Papa is a Miami-based online service that connects older adults to college students for companionship and practical services, like transportation, household chores, or help with technology. Papa cheekily refers to its services as "Grandkids on demand." The company recently raised over $2 million and plans to expand to new markets, according to an article on Mobihealthnews. There is a regular membership, which costs $20/hr and a premium membership that offers some extra perks, like being able to schedule same-day visits and choosing your "pal".

This service may be a great solution to help combat the loneliness adults sometimes experience as they age - and a practical solution - at the same time. More adults are choosing to age in place and can use help with certain everyday tasks from younger, stronger bodies. By connecting with a Papa Pal, older adults can stay independent in their homes, but get the help they need in their daily lives.

Because loneliness is increasing even in the 16-24 age group, this idea could also help the younger "pals". If college is a long way from home, kids may be learning how to deal with being away from family for the first time - having an older pal could help bring some comfort as they adjust. Maybe the younger kids will gain a mentor in the process, while earning money doing something important and worthwhile. And becoming a mentor as an older adult can help older adults feel like they have more of a purpose, which is always a great thing! Everyone wants to feel important, smart, and needed.

As lifespans increase and technology takes over more of our lives, the loneliness epidemic is probably not going anywhere. Sure, the whole idea of connecting an older adult with a younger adult isn't a brand new concept, but Papa sure makes it easy.

So, whether you could use this app or use it for an aging parent, keep it in mind. If you have college kids, tell them about it. And of course, safety is always a concern, so be sure to check with Papa on some recommendations on how to stay safe.

Hats off to Papa for coming up with an idea that could really help people!
