These Are the Healthiest Nations

Where does the U.S. stack when it comes to the healthiest nation? Lower than you might expect!

The Bloomberg Healthiest Country Index has been revealed and Spain has topped the list for 2019, up from sixth place the previous go-round in 2017. Italy, Iceland, Japan, and Switzerland make up the top 5.

The index ranks 169 economies according to factors that contribute to overall health. So things like life expectancy, access to clean water, and sanitation are important, and penalties are imposed for risk factors like tobacco use and obesity.

The United States ranks 35th. Probably lower than you might have thought, right? According to the study, life expectancy in the U.S. has been trending lower due to drug overdoses and suicides.

Researchers have commented on eating habits found in Spain and Italy, noting that the Mediterranean diet is common in those nations and is linked to lower cardiovascular events. It's no secret that our nation has a problem with obesity, which pulls down our overall rank.

For Europe lovers, these rankings may be another reason to consider a move after retirement!
