Candace Bergen Is Back as Murphy Brown

The long-running television show, Murphy Brown, is back this fall as a CBS reboot. The newsroom comedy, which ran from 1988-1998, is set to premiere September 27th and features actress Candace Bergen as her original anchorwoman character. Also back for the remake, are Murphy’s colleagues Corky (Faith Ford), Frank (Joe Regalbuto) and her producer Miles (Grant Shaud).

Bergen and creator Diane English are both over 70, with no other women lead actresses under 50 years old. It seems the show is making a statement about age. According to a Time article, English states “Maybe we’re going to be an example once again at this age. We’re most definitely showing that we’re not done. We have plenty to offer.” Bergen is a baby boomer at 72 years old and the show will likely earn many baby boomer viewers.

The timing of the reboot is particularly interesting given today's political climate. As a show about a cable news program tackling real, relevant issues, Bergen told TIME she is bracing for criticism from the right. Social media didn't exist back in the 90's, so it will be quite interesting to see the reactions, backlash and opinions after each episode. It may get ugly.

Having won five Emmy's throughout the original show's run, Bergen should impress once again.
